How to Score Well in the General Knowledge Timed Test
General knowledge covers many areas, but initial tests keep returning to a limited set of topics. A timed test shows how many of these facts you can recall quickly, which is the real challenge, because most candidates know the answer once they see it. Attempt this test after you have revised the topics above, and treat the result as a map of what to study next.
Begin with Pakistan
Pakistan is the centre of most general knowledge questions. Revise the Pakistan Movement, important dates, national symbols, provinces and their capitals, major rivers, mountains and well-known personalities. Study them in small groups, for example one province or one river system each day. Add basic Islamic knowledge as listed in your syllabus. Strong knowledge of your own country gives you a solid base for the whole paper.
Add the world around you
After Pakistan, widen your view slowly. Learn the major countries and their capitals, important international organisations such as the United Nations, and a few famous world events. Spend ten minutes a day on national and international headlines and note down names, places and agreements in a small notebook. You only need enough to recognise important names and events when they appear as options.
Use memory tricks
Facts stay in memory when they are connected. Link a date with an event and an event with a person. Create short sentences or word chains for long lists, such as rivers from north to south. Keep a wall chart with a simple map of Pakistan and look at it daily. Read your short lists aloud, because hearing yourself helps recall far better than silent reading.
Be careful with similar options
General knowledge options are often close to each other, such as two similar dates or two names with almost the same spelling. Read each option fully, and do not choose the first familiar one. If you are unsure, eliminate the options you know are wrong and select from what remains. Check the exact wording of the question, especially words like first, only, largest and capital.
Review and update your notes
After each test, write the facts you missed on one page and revise that page every evening for a week. Then take the test again and compare your scores. Remember that some facts change with time, so use recent sources for current affairs and check the official announcement for what your course expects. A short daily habit beats a long weekend session every time.
